Timer & Stopwatch

A countdown timer with presets and an alarm, plus a stopwatch with laps.

00:00:00.00

Time an activity or count down from a set time

Timer & Stopwatch puts two clocks on one page. The stopwatch counts up to a hundredth of a second and records laps; the timer counts down from any length up to 99 hours, 59 minutes and 59 seconds and tells you when it reaches zero.

Both run in your browser without sending anything anywhere. Time is worked out from timestamps rather than by counting ticks, so the reading is still correct after you’ve spent a while in another tab.

How to use the stopwatch and countdown timer

    1. Choose the Stopwatch or Timer tab. Switching between them doesn’t stop whichever one is running.
    2. Stopwatch: click Start, then Lap to record a split. Pause stops the clock, Resume carries on, and Reset clears the time and laps.
    3. Timer: enter Hours, Minutes and Seconds (minutes and seconds go up to 59, so type 1 h 30 min rather than 90 min), or pick a preset — 1, 5, 10, 15 or 25 min, or 1 hour.
    4. Click Start. Pause and Resume as needed, or Reset to go back to the time you set.
    5. Leave Play a sound when the timer ends ticked if you want an audible alert.

What you’ll see while it runs

    • Lap list: newest lap at the top, each with the lap’s own time and the running total.
    • Progress bar: fills as the countdown runs, so you can judge how much time is left at a glance.
    • Tab title: shows the remaining time while the timer runs and “Time’s up!” when it ends — handy when the page is behind other tabs.
    • End alert: a “Time’s up!” message, plus three short beeps if sound is on. Click Restart to run the same countdown again.

    Things people time

    • Focus sessions: the 25-minute preset suits Pomodoro-style work blocks.
    • Workouts: use laps for running splits or interval sets.
    • Cooking: count down a bake or a brew while you get on with something else.
    • Talks and practice exams: keep a presentation, a timed answer or speaking practice to length.
    • Meetings: time-box agenda items; for calls across regions, agree the start time with the Timezone Converter.

Making sure you notice the alert

    • Keep the page open — closing or reloading it resets both the stopwatch and the timer.
    • Browsers slow down pages in background tabs. The remaining time stays accurate, but the beep and message can arrive late, so keep the tab visible when the exact second matters.
    • Turn your device volume up. If you still don’t hear anything, the on-screen message and the tab title show that the timer has finished.

    Timer & Stopwatch: common questions

Does the timer keep going if I switch to another tab?

Yes. The countdown is based on timestamps, so the time left is correct when you come back. Because browsers slow down timers in background tabs, the alert can come late — up to about a minute after zero if the tab has been in the background for a while.

Does the timer make a sound when it ends?

Yes — three short beeps, as long as Play a sound when the timer ends is ticked (it is by default) and your browser allows the page to play audio.

Can I run the stopwatch and the timer at the same time?

Yes. Start one, switch tabs and start the other; each keeps running independently.

    How precise is the stopwatch?

It shows hundredths of a second and measures elapsed time with the browser’s high-resolution clock. In practice, your reaction time when clicking matters far more than the clock.

    Is there a maximum time?

The countdown goes up to 99 hours, 59 minutes and 59 seconds. The stopwatch has no set limit.

Will it remember a running timer if I close the page?

No. Nothing is saved, so closing or reloading the tab starts both clocks from scratch. More small utilities like this are in Miscellaneous.
