Random Name Generator
Generate up to 50 random first names, surnames or full names at a time.
Generate made-up names for characters and test data
Random Name Generator puts together first names and surnames from built-in lists, up to 50 at a time. Use the results as placeholder people in a design, sample records in a database, or characters in a story or game.
Names are picked by your browser’s cryptographic random number generator. The lists are part of the page, so nothing is fetched while you generate and the names you get aren’t sent anywhere.
How to generate a list of random names
- Choose a Gender — Any, Female or Male. This only affects the first names.
- Under Show, pick First and last name, First name only or Last name only.
- Set How many? to a number from 1 to 50.
- Click Generate names for a fresh batch. Changing any option also produces a new list straight away.
- Click Copy all to copy the whole list to your clipboard, one name per line.
What’s in each batch
- No repeats in a batch. Every name in one list is different, though a new batch can repeat names from an earlier one.
- Fixed source lists: 59 female first names, 59 male first names and 100 surnames, drawn from many languages and regions — from Olivia and Mateo to Priya, Kenji and Adaeze, with surnames such as Garcia, Nguyen, Okafor and Kowalski.
- Free pairing: first names and surnames are combined at random, so a full name won’t necessarily come from a single culture.
Where random names come in handy
- Test data: fill user tables, sign-up forms and CRM imports with realistic-looking people, and give each record an ID from the UUID Generator.
- Design mockups: replace “John Doe” in profile cards, comment threads and team pages, alongside dummy copy from the Lorem Ipsum Generator.
- Writing and games: name a minor character, a non-player character or a tabletop campaign’s villagers.
- Teaching materials: use varied, neutral names in worksheets, case studies and sample scenarios.
Getting names that fit
- Need more than 50? Copy one batch, generate another and paste it underneath — then check for duplicates between batches.
- Pick Female or Male when a character or record needs a gendered first name; Any mixes both lists.
- Because these are common real names, avoid pairing a generated name with realistic details such as an employer or home town in anything public, so it doesn’t point to an actual person.
Random Name Generator: common questions
Are these real people’s names?
They’re common first names and surnames combined at random, so a full name could belong to someone somewhere — but none is taken from a list of real people.
How many names can I generate at once?
Up to 50 per batch. If you type a bigger number, it’s brought back down to 50.
Can I choose a nationality or language?
No. There’s no region setting; first names and surnames from different backgrounds are mixed together.
Is there an option for gender-neutral names?
There isn’t a separate list. Choose Any to draw from all the first names at once.
How random are the results?
Each pick uses your browser’s cryptographic random number generator, so the order can’t be predicted. Variety is limited by the size of the built-in lists. Other quick generators are in Miscellaneous.
