Random Number Generator

Generate random numbers in a range, with decimals, no repeats or dice rolls.

Dice:

Pick random numbers from a range you choose

Random Number Generator draws one or more numbers between a Minimum and a Maximum, and either end can come up. You can choose whole numbers or up to six decimal places, rule out repeats, sort the list, or roll common dice.

The numbers come from your browser’s cryptographic random source, crypto.getRandomValues, on your device, not from a server. It’s meant for everyday picks such as games, lessons and test data — not for gambling, lotteries or anything security-related.

How to generate random numbers

  1. Enter a Minimum and a Maximum. Negative numbers and decimals are both accepted.
  2. Set How many, from 1 to 10,000, and choose Decimal places: None (whole numbers) or 1 to 6.
  3. Tick No repeats (every number different) if each value may appear only once, and pick an Order: As drawn, Smallest first or Largest first.
  4. Click Generate; click again for a fresh set.
  5. For dice, click d4, d6, d8, d10, d12, d20 or d100 instead. The range becomes 1 to that number and the roll happens straight away.

What appears after each draw

  • The numbers, each shown with the decimal places you chose, so with two places a 3 appears as 3.00.
  • A summary line: how many numbers were drawn and from what range, their sum when there’s more than one, and how many possible values the range holds.
  • Copy numbers: puts the list on your clipboard one number per line, ready to paste into a spreadsheet column.

Good everyday uses for a random pick

  • Classrooms and games: choose a student number, a quiz question or a turn order.
  • Tabletop play: roll several dice together and read their total from the sum.
  • Spot checks: with No repeats ticked, pick which rows of a numbered list to review.
  • Test data: fill a column with values in a realistic range; for made-up names instead of numbers, use the Random Name Generator.

How the numbers are drawn

Every value has the same chance

A common shortcut, keeping the remainder after dividing a large random number by the size of the range, makes some results slightly more likely than others. This generator uses rejection sampling instead: any random value that would tip the balance is discarded and drawn again, so every value in the range is equally likely.

Decimals sit on an even grid

With decimal places set, the range is split into equal steps. Two places between 1 and 2 gives 1.00, 1.01 and so on up to 2.00 — 101 possible values, each as likely as the rest. A Minimum or Maximum with more decimals than you chose is rounded inwards to the nearest step inside the range.

Random Number Generator: common questions

Can I use it for a lottery, raffle or betting?

No. It isn’t designed or audited for gambling or regulated draws, and it keeps no record or seed that could later show a draw was fair. Use whatever method the rules of the draw require.

Can I use these numbers for passwords or PINs?

It isn’t intended for security-sensitive use. For passwords, the Password Generator is built for the job.

Why do I get an error when No repeats is ticked?

You’ve asked for more different numbers than the range contains — seven from 1 to 6, for example. The error says how many values exist; widen the range, add decimal places or ask for fewer numbers.

How do I roll more than one die at once?

Set How many first, say to 3, then click d6. Each roll is listed and the summary gives the total. A dice button also unticks No repeats, because dice can land on the same number.

Is there a limit on the range?

You can draw up to 10,000 numbers per click. A very wide range with many decimal places can hold more steps than can be counted exactly, and a message then asks for a smaller range or fewer decimals. More odds-and-ends tools live in Miscellaneous.
