Fill a layout with placeholder text
Lorem ipsum is dummy text that looks like Latin. Designers drop it into mockups, templates and wireframes so a layout can be judged before the real copy exists — people look at the shape of the text instead of reading it.
This generator builds the text in your browser from a list of classic lorem ipsum words in random order. Ask for a number of paragraphs, sentences or words and you get exactly that many, as plain text or wrapped in HTML paragraph tags.
How to generate dummy text
- Enter a number from 1 to 100 under Generate, then choose Paragraphs, Sentences or Words.
- Pick a Format: Plain text, or HTML (<p> tags) to paste straight into a page’s code.
- Leave “Start with ‘Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet…’” ticked for the familiar opening, or untick it.
- The text updates when you change a setting. Click Generate for a new random version with the same settings.
- Click Copy text to copy everything in the box.
What the generated text looks like
- Paragraphs have 4 to 7 sentences each and are separated by a blank line.
- Sentences run from 6 to 14 words, start with a capital and end with a full stop. Longer ones get a single comma.
- Sentences and Words modes produce one continuous block. In Words mode the block is capitalised and ends with a full stop.
- HTML format wraps each paragraph in <p>…</p>, so Sentences or Words mode gives a single <p> element.
- The line under the box shows how many words and characters you’ve generated, not counting HTML tags.
Where placeholder text earns its place
- Website and app mockups: show a client how a page will look before the copy is approved.
- Theme and template building: check how a blog or CMS theme copes with a very short post and a very long one.
- Typography tests: compare fonts, line heights and column widths on realistic blocks of text.
- Test data: fill description fields in a demo database, alongside fake names from the Random Name Generator and IDs from the UUID Generator.
Using lorem ipsum without surprises
- Generate roughly the amount of text the real copy will have — a headline-sized Words block for a heading, not three paragraphs.
- Untick the classic opening when you need several blocks that don’t all begin with the same sentence.
- Search the finished site for “lorem” before launch; leftover placeholder text is easy to miss.
- Real copy can wrap differently, especially in languages with long words such as German, so review the layout again once it arrives.
Lorem Ipsum Generator: common questions
What does lorem ipsum mean?
Nothing, deliberately. It comes from a passage of Cicero’s “De finibus bonorum et malorum”, with words cut and changed so it no longer reads as Latin. The text here goes further, picking words from that vocabulary at random.
Is the text different every time?
Yes. Apart from the optional “Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet” opening, every click of Generate shuffles a new set of words and sentence lengths.
Will I get exactly the number of words I ask for?
In Words mode, yes — ask for 50 and you get 50. In Paragraphs and Sentences mode the word total varies, and the count under the box tells you what you got.
What’s the most I can generate at once?
100 paragraphs, sentences or words. Larger numbers are reduced to 100; generate again and copy a second batch if you need more.
